My teaching is based on the SIMI METHOD that I learnt in the early 1980s, from Nerina Simi in Florence.
Besides the practice of the manual skills of drawing, painting, and sculpture, I have added, over the years, a more analytical approach of visual perception.
I give personal tuition in my studio and 2 workshops a year in the Apuan mountains in Italy.
All lessons are adapted to the needs of each student.
WORKSHOP FOR 2025
(maximum 6 students, all levels of artistic ability)
This Workshop will be split in 2 locations; the town of Pietrasanta on the plain and the village of Stazzema in the mountains, and will include a morning painting in a marble quarry, (only if the weather permits).
Since I have the fortune to be living in a place that every sculptor dreams of working in, I have devoted the first 2 days of the next workshop giving a privileged peek and explanatory guide behind the scenes of the art world of sculpture.
If you have never thought about how sculptures evolve from an initial drawing, be prepared to be well and truly amazed!
The skills of the Pietrasanta artisans here are so famous that artists come from all over the world to carry out their projects, whether it be in metal or marble, from the initial maquette to the finished sculpture ready to be shipped.
Pietrasanta:
I have permissions to show a small privileged group of people into these internationally renowned studios and a large bronze foundry. I will explain the complicated process of making a sculpture from the beginning idea to the finish in bronze or marble.
Stazzema:
With my individual tuition, here is the chance to paint plein air and to improve drawing and tonal work. I will give demonstrations where needed and information on the materials of pastels, oils, and and waterbased colours.
The last day, Saturday, if the weather permits, there will be a guided tour of a working marble quarry plus an aperitivo, with a chance to work for a morning in the peace of 1300 m above sea level. This is truly a very special experience.
(maximum 6 students, a minimum level of experience required)
2 FABULOUS LOCATIONS!
We will stay in Stazzema and visit the old mills and stream in the valley below. On the Saturday, if the weather permits, there will be a guided tour of a working marble quarry plus an aperitivo, with a chance to work for a morning in the peace of 1300 m above sea level. This is truly a very special experience.
